Mufasa: The Lion King Trailer Reveals Brotherly Bond Turned Bitter Rivalry

Disney unveiled an extended look at the upcoming animated prequel, "Mufasa: The Lion King," during its D23 Expo on Friday evening.

Before the trailer's reveal, the stage was graced by singers who performed a snippet of the film's opening song. Director Barry Jenkins then took the stage, expressing his deep connection to "The Lion King." "Like all of you, 'The Lion King' made an indelible mark on me," Jenkins remarked. "Hearing the music and feeling every emotion as the story unfolded - a father bestowing a legacy upon his son, a pride being built anew, and a young lion rising to his destiny. Telling his story is an absolute honour."

Jenkins also announced that Lin-Manuel Miranda would compose the film's original songs. The renowned composer received a standing ovation as he joined Jenkins to preview the song, "I Always Wanted a Brother."

The "Lion King" prequel takes place before the events of the 2019 live-action remake and is directed by Jenkins. "Mufasa" delves into the early years of the future ruler of Pride Rock, as well as his menacing younger brother Scar. Aaron Pierre and Kelvin Harrison Jr. lead the voice cast as the younger versions of Mufasa (voiced by James Earl Jones in the 1994 film and 2019 remake) and Scar (voiced by Jeremy Irons in the 1994 version and Chiwetel Ejiofor in the 2019 remake). Beyoncé Knowles-Carter returns to voice Nala, with her daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, playing Kiara, the daughter of King Samba and Queen Nala.

The new trailer offers a glimpse into the dynamic between young Mufasa and his sibling Scar, showcasing their relationship evolving from brotherly camaraderie to bitter enemies.

New cast additions include Tiffany Boone as Sarabi; Kagiso Lediga as Young Rafiki; Preston Nyman as Zazu; Mads Mikkelsen as Kiros, a formidable lion with ambitious plans for his pride; Thandiwe Newton as Taka's mother, Eshe; Lennie James as Taka's father, Obasi; Anika Noni Rose as Mufasa's mother, Afia; and Keith David as Mufasa's father, Masego.

Jenkins reunites with his trusted creative team, including composer Nicholas Britell, editor Joi McMillon, and cinematographer James Laxton.

The 2019 remake, directed by Jon Favreau, achieved phenomenal success, grossing a staggering $1.66 billion globally and becoming one of seven Disney films to surpass the billion-dollar mark that year.

"Mufasa: The Lion King" is set to roar into cinemas on December 20th.
