Minecraft Movie Leak: First Look at Jack Black as Steve

Images from the upcoming Minecraft movie have reportedly leaked online, revealing the first look at Jack Black as the iconic character, Steve.

The images, which were allegedly leaked on the image board 4chan, appear to be from a document produced by Minecraft developer, Mojang. They depict Jack Black in character, sporting Steve’s signature blue shirt and jeans, a beard, and holding a pickaxe. The images also showcase familiar Minecraft creatures, including a Creeper, a cuboid bee, and a cross-eyed pink sheep.

Eurogamer, who first reported the leak, notes that the images were removed from X/Twitter "in response to a report from the copyright holder," suggesting their legitimacy. IGN has reached out to Microsoft, the owner of Minecraft, for comment.

The leaked images offer a glimpse into the movie’s plot. They suggest that Steve is captured by a villain named Malgosha and that "four fresh visitors" to the Minecraft world embark on a mission to rescue him.

Jack Black previously teased his role as Steve in an Instagram video posted in April. The video showcased a joyful rendition of the “Double Rainbow” song before revealing a trailer belonging to Steve from the Minecraft movie. Black then gave a tour of the trailer, showcasing images of the blocky character.

The Minecraft movie is set to feature a cast of actors including Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, Jason Momoa, and Jennifer Coolidge.

Black, a veteran of video game adaptations, recently voiced Bowser in the 2023 film “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and will soon appear as Claptrap in the upcoming “Borderlands” film.

While fans can catch Black as Claptrap in August, they’ll have to wait a little longer to see him as Steve. The Minecraft movie is currently scheduled to be released on April 4, 2025.

The leak of the Minecraft movie images comes after criticism of Jack Black’s handling of Tenacious D’s world tour cancellation, which followed his bandmate Kyle Gass’ on-stage comment about the assassination attempt on former U.S. President Donald Trump.
