"Michael" Biopic Aims to Humanize the King of Pop, Says Colman Domingo

Colman Domingo, known for his role in the HBO drama "Euphoria", has spoken out about the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic, "Michael", stating that the film will offer a more nuanced and humanising perspective of the late pop icon.

During an interview on "Radio Andy" with host Andy Cohen, Domingo, who portrays the Jackson family patriarch Joe Jackson in the film, shed light on the biopic's approach to a complex figure. He revealed that the film will encompass "a lot of things that are epic and monumental", spanning over 30 years of Michael Jackson's life.

"I think the whole point of this biopic is to really humanize Michael and really show like the making of Michael and who he is," Domingo explained, emphasising the film's aim to delve into the complexities of Jackson's persona and development. "It deals with a lot of things, even things that may be controversial," he added, suggesting that the film will not shy away from the more contentious aspects of Jackson's life.

Domingo underscored that the biopic will present a balanced narrative, incorporating both the Jackson family's perspective and a compelling cinematic story. "It's got the family love and support, but they didn't get in the way of really telling a compelling story," he shared, acknowledging the inherent tension between family involvement and journalistic integrity.

"We really show how this family built themselves, how they relate to each other and to the world and what the world has also created," Domingo concluded, highlighting the film's ambition to present a holistic portrait of the Jackson family and their impact on both music and popular culture.

The biopic, which will premiere on April 18, 2025, features Jaafar Jackson, Jermaine Jackson's son and Michael's nephew, in the titular role. Domingo expressed his admiration for the young actor's performance, stating that Jaafar "is exceptional" and possesses "once-in-a-lifetime talent".

"When I tell you, you'll think you'll be looking at AI, but no. You're actually just looking at this performer in the height of his talents, you know, giving love to the legacy that he stands on," Domingo remarked, conveying a sense of awe at Jaafar's embodiment of Michael Jackson.

Domingo has previously spoken about his desire to capture the complexities of Joe Jackson in the film, aiming to reveal his humanity and offer a nuanced portrayal that transcends public perceptions. “I want to find their humanity, I want to find their heart and their humor," he shared in a previous interview. "It may go against public opinion sometimes, but I think that's my responsibility to find the complex version of these people.”

"Michael", with its ambitious scope and intention to offer a more multifaceted view of the iconic singer, promises to be a significant cinematic event for both music lovers and those fascinated by the enduring legacy of Michael Jackson.
