Meena Kumari Biopic Delayed Again: 2025 Release Expected

The highly anticipated biopic of legendary actress Meena Kumari, starring Kriti Sanon and directed by fashion designer Manish Malhotra, has been postponed yet again. The film, originally slated for a 2023 release, has now been pushed back to early 2025.

This delay, according to reports in Mid-day, stems from Malhotra's meticulous approach to the project. He is personally overseeing every aspect, ensuring that the biopic captures the essence of Meena Kumari's life with utmost accuracy. Sources close to the production reveal that Malhotra is revisiting the script, with multiple script doctors reviewing it before filming commences.

The project's ambition to recreate the golden age of Hindi cinema requires careful planning and extensive pre-production. Meticulously crafting costumes to portray one of Hindi cinema's most celebrated actresses is a crucial element that demands ample time.

“Since it's a period drama, this allows them ample time for pre-production. Costumes are also a big part when recounting the story of one of Hindi cinema's finest actors, and their recreation will take time,” a source informed.

The film, which will be Kriti Sanon's first biopic in her decade-long career, aims to pay tribute to Meena Kumari, the "Tragedy Queen" known for her unforgettable portrayals of sorrow and resilience on screen. From the iconic "Baiju Bawra" (1952) to "Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam" (1962) and the unforgettable "Pakeezah" (1972), Meena Kumari delivered some of Indian cinema's most treasured performances before her untimely demise in 1972.

While the official title remains under wraps, anticipation for the film is sure to grow as we inch closer to its release in the first half of 2025. This meticulously crafted biopic promises to be a heartfelt tribute to the legend that was Meena Kumari.
