Maya Jama and Stormzy Split After a Year of Trying to Make it Work

Maya Jama and Stormzy have ended their relationship, just a year after rekindling their romance. The couple confirmed their split in a joint Instagram statement on Wednesday, admitting they had been trying for the past year "to make it work."

Their statement, which was written with a lighthearted tone, reflected on their long and complicated journey together: "We fell madly in love in 2014, broke up in 2019, and then spent five years manoeuvring life apart." After giving their relationship "one final attempt" in August 2023, they ultimately decided to call it quits.

"We were 21 and 20 when we first met – both at the beginning of our careers – and spent five years growing together and then five years growing separately, so this final attempt required a whole lot of figuring out, relearning and unlearning," they explained.

Despite the breakup, the pair emphasized that they still hold a deep respect and care for one another: "We still think the absolute world of each other, we still care and respect each other, we are still grateful for the time we've had together, and we are still friends and will always be friends." They jokingly urged fans not to be surprised if they are seen hanging out at events like the Brit Awards: "We are dawgs!"

The couple first sparked romance in 2014, quickly becoming one of the most popular couples in the UK entertainment scene. Their relationship blossomed through their shared ambition and similar backgrounds, eventually transitioning from a "normal relationship" to a high-profile power couple.

Throughout their time together, they frequently graced red carpets, shared glimpses into their lives on social media, and even lived together in South West London. Stormzy had even declared his intention to marry Maya, telling the Sunday Mirror in February 2018 that "she is so sick, she is the best."

However, their relationship came to an end in 2019, with Maya's representatives confirming the split and sources reporting that she had already moved out of their shared home. While Stormzy has always denied any infidelity, he has acknowledged making mistakes and described his behavior as "disrespectful."

After their separation, Maya went on to get engaged to basketball star Ben Simmons in 2021. Their relationship, however, proved to be short-lived, ending eight months later due to their busy schedules and long-distance struggles.

In 2023, Maya was also linked to Leonardo DiCaprio, but both denied the rumors. It was then that the former couple rekindled their romance, officially confirming their reunion in August 2023.

Their latest split comes just a week after their public appearance at the British Grand Prix, where Maya supported Stormzy's performance. They had also been seen together at Glastonbury and Maya had even shown support for his new bar in Soho.

Despite the heartbreak, both Maya and Stormzy have expressed their gratitude for the time they spent together and remain optimistic about their future, emphasizing that they "will always be friends." While their journey together has been a rollercoaster of ups and downs, their decision to end their relationship highlights the complexities and challenges of navigating love in the public eye.
