Life Imitates Art for 'Casualty' Star
Charles Venn, known for his role as Jacob Masters in the long-running medical drama 'Casualty', is experiencing a unique blend of reality and fiction. The 51-year-old actor recently welcomed a grandchild into his life, mirroring a significant storyline in the show.
In recent episodes, Jacob Masters has become the legal guardian of his grandchild, Carter, after his son, Blake (Kai Thorne), abandoned the child outside the A&E department. This storyline has taken on a personal resonance for Venn, who himself recently became a grandfather.
"I recently became a grandad myself in real life, so the timing feels like art imitating life!" he shared with OK! magazine. The actor admitted that this particular role has been incredibly fulfilling. "Jacob is definitely the most fulfilling character I've ever played and Iâve grown as an actor with him," Venn explained. "Heâs gone through so many challenges in his nine, almost 10, years at 'Holby' and there are still many things unexplored with him." He chuckled, adding, "Although, when I started in 2015, I had a lot less grey hair!"
While his character finds himself thrust into the role of full-time grandfather, Venn acknowledged the difficulties Jacob faces. "Of course Jacob takes on the role of guardian, as difficult as that is to do," he stated. "But itâs better than Carter being taken into care. So Jacobâs having to juggle looking after him along with his job â luckily heâs got lovely Jan [Di Botcher] to help him, otherwise there would be no way he could do that."
Venn also highlighted the emotional toll Jacob is experiencing, with the added stress of Blake's absence. "In the midst of that, heâs looking for Blake. As a father, the thought of my son out there and I donât know where he is, itâs not right. Blake has a history with narcotics too, so itâs stressful," he confessed.
Venn's real-life experience as a grandfather adds an extra layer of authenticity to his portrayal of Jacob. As the storyline unfolds, audiences can expect to see Jacob navigate the complexities of raising a child while grappling with the uncertain future of his son.
