Leeds indie band English Teacher are set to throw a free concert in their hometown, celebrating their nomination for the prestigious Mercury Prize. The gig, a thank you to fans, will take place at the iconic Brudenell Social Club in Burley on Wednesday evening, starting at 7pm. With limited capacity, fans are advised to arrive early, as it will be a first come, first served affair.
The band's debut record, "This Could Be Texas," earned them a coveted spot on the Mercury Prize 2024 shortlist, announced last Thursday. They join a diverse group of nominees, including fellow Leeds artist Corinne Bailey Rae, Bradford record producer Nia Archives, and chart-topping acts like Charlie XCX and The Last Dinner Party.
English Teacher will also be performing in Leeds' Millennium Square on Saturday, opening for previous Mercury Prize nominees, fellow Leeds band Yard Act. This double-header of gigs offers local fans a chance to witness the band's rising star power firsthand.
The 2024 Mercury Prize winner will be revealed in September, and English Teacher are certainly contenders for the coveted award. With their unique sound and dedicated fanbase, their nomination has solidified their place as a key force in the British music scene.
