BBC Radio 6 Music and Desert Island Discs presenter Lauren Laverne has revealed she is currently recovering in hospital after being diagnosed with cancer.
In a post on Instagram on Wednesday morning, the 46-year-old broadcaster shared that the cancer was discovered "early and unexpectedly" during a routine screening test. She expressed optimism, stating that she is "expected to make a full recovery".
Laverne expressed her gratitude to the medical staff for their "incredible skill and kindness", as well as to her colleagues for their support and for allowing her the time necessary for her recovery. She also acknowledged the unwavering support of her family and friends.
The announcement of her diagnosis comes as Laverne is preparing for her annual summer break from her hosting duties. She currently presents the breakfast show on BBC Radio 6 Music, as well as the iconic BBC Radio 4 programme, Desert Island Discs.
Laverne's Instagram post serves as a stark reminder of the importance of regular health checks. She urged her followers to not delay appointments or screenings, highlighting that "half of us will get cancer at some point and finding out asap is everything."
The news of Laverne's diagnosis has been met with an outpouring of support from fellow broadcasters, celebrities, and fans alike. Colleagues such as Gabby Logan, Clara Amfo, and Anita Rani, have offered their well wishes, while others, including comedian Sarah Millican and McFly's Harry Judd, have also expressed their support.
A BBC spokesperson offered their best wishes to Laverne and expressed their anticipation for her return to work when she is ready.
Laverne's absence will be felt across her various broadcasting commitments. Nick Grimshaw will be stepping in to host the 6 Music Breakfast Show next week while Laverne enjoys her pre-planned holiday, with the following week's presenter to be announced at a later date. Desert Island Discs, which is currently off air, is due to return in mid-September.
Laverne is best known for her work on BBC Radio, but she has also presented a variety of television programmes, including The One Show and Channel 4's 10 O'Clock Live. She initially gained fame in the 1990s as the lead singer and guitarist of pop punk band Kenickie.
Throughout her career, Laverne has become a beloved figure in British broadcasting, and her resilience in the face of this challenge is sure to be met with admiration and support from her many fans.
