Knight's Tale Musical Set for Manchester Premiere

A musical adaptation of the beloved 2001 film "A Knight's Tale" is set to make its world premiere at Manchester Opera House on April 11, 2025. The limited engagement, running through May 10, promises a "sexy, silly, jousty, dancey, romance-y, musical extravaganza," according to Irish comedy writer and actor Brona C Titley, who penned the stage adaptation.

The jukebox musical will utilize existing pop tunes, though the specific selections remain under wraps for now. Director Rachel Kavanaugh, known for her work in theatre, and Olivier award-winning choreographer Matt Cole will bring the story to life with a dynamic blend of music, dance, and spectacle. Casting and the complete creative team are expected to be announced at a later date.

"A Knight's Tale" tells the story of William Thatcher, a 14th-century peasant squire who, defying all odds, masquerades as a nobleman to compete in the world of jousting. He finds himself vying for the championship against the ruthless Count Adhemar. The film, starring Heath Ledger, Paul Bettany, Mark Addy, and Rufus Sewell, was a hit with audiences, becoming a modern classic.

Original film writer and director Brian Helgeland expressed his enthusiasm for the musical adaptation. "Over 20 years ago I had the time of my life making a film we all fell in love with while we were joyfully making it," Helgeland said in a statement. "Sitting at a recent read through of the stage version... I could feel that same joy and love emerging. I am grateful for the new life they are creating and very eager to see it in all its fully staged glory."

Titley added, "This show is a sexy, silly, jousty, dancey, romance-y, musical extravaganza! It’s been one of the most fulfilling jobs of my career so far, and I hope audiences love it as much as I do—do not miss this joyous, dizzy ride people!"

Kavanaugh, who will direct the production, shared her excitement for the project. "I am beyond excited to be directing Brona’s brilliant and hilarious stage adaptation of Brian’s ground-breaking film. With a score of well-loved rock and pop bangers, jousting, dancing, adventure, and romance, I hope we can give the audience a knight to remember as we follow the journey of a thatcher’s son and find out if he really can ‘change his stars’.”

"A Knight's Tale The Musical" is produced by Tristan Baker and Charlie Parsons for Runaway Entertainment and Isobel David, by arrangement with Sony Pictures and Brian Helgeland. Tickets for the general public go on sale August 1.
