Kaufhold's Olympic Archery Dream Takes a Hit in Paris

Lancaster County's own Casey Kaufhold, a Conestoga Valley graduate, has seen her hopes of securing a women's team Olympic archery medal dashed in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Kaufhold and her United States teammates, Catalina Gnoriega and Jennifer Mucino, faced elimination in the round of 16 at the Esplanade des Invalides in Paris, falling to Taiwan. The Taiwanese team of Chiu Yi-Ching, Lei Chien-Ying and Li Tsai-Chi claimed a decisive 5-1 victory, securing their spot in the quarter-finals against Korea.

Other notable results from the early elimination rounds saw the Netherlands (Quinty Roeffen, Gaby Schloesser and Laura van der Winkel) dominate France (Lisa Barbelin, Amelie Cordeau and Caroline Lopez) with a resounding 6-0 score. Indonesia (Diananda Choirunisa, Syifa Nurafifah Kamal and Rezza Octavia) edged out Malaysia (Syaqiera Mashayikh, Nurul Azreena Mohamad Fazil and Ariana Nur Dania Mohamad Zairi) 5-3, while Germany (Katharina Bauer, Michelle Kroppen and Charline Schwarz) achieved a convincing 6-0 win over Great Britain (Penny Healey, Megan Havers and Bryony Pitman).

Later on Sunday, the Netherlands will face India in the next round, while Indonesia will take on China and Germany will meet Mexico. The tournament will then progress to the semi-finals, followed by the bronze and gold medal matches.

Kaufhold, who is currently ranked fourth following the qualification round, will next compete in the round of 32 on Thursday at 6:45 am. She will face Fatoumata Sylla (ranked 61st) of Guinea.

The men's team competition will be held on Monday, with the individual brackets for both men and women commencing on Tuesday and running throughout the week.
