James Bond Star George Lazenby Retires From Showbiz Amid Frailty

The Australian actor, known for his role as James Bond in the 1969 film "On Her Majesty's Secret Service," has been spotted using a walking frame in Santa Monica, California. The 84-year-old Lazenby, who recently retired from showbiz citing the effects of ageing, was seen accompanied by family members, appearing frail and requiring assistance.

The sighting follows a brain injury sustained by Lazenby in a fall late last year. He was hospitalised after the incident and subsequently spent three weeks recovering in a California nursing home. His manager shared a photo of Lazenby looking chipper during his recovery, with a prominent scar visible on his head.

Lazenby's manager expressed his gratitude for the medical professionals who cared for him, commenting on X that, despite the challenges of getting older, "at 84, George has certainly demonstrated what a fighter he is."

The actor's recent public appearances follow his announcement in July that he would be stepping away from acting and public life. He cited the difficulties of ageing and expressed his desire to spend more time with family. In a heartfelt message on X, Lazenby thanked his fans for their support and wished them well.

His retirement comes amidst a turbulent period in his career. Last year, Lazenby was removed from a live theatre show in Australia after allegations of inappropriate comments. The show's organiser, Concertworks, released a statement expressing disappointment at Lazenby's language, stating that it reflected his "personal views," for which there was "no excuse in today's society."

Lazenby later issued an apology on X, stating that he was "saddened to hear" his remarks had offended anyone and that it was "never [his] intention."

Despite his single Bond outing, Lazenby's portrayal of the iconic secret agent left a lasting impression on fans. He went on to star in films such as "Universal Soldier" (1971), "Who Saw Her Die?" (1972), "The Shrine of Ultimate Bliss" (1974), "The Man from Hong Kong" (1975), and "The Kentucky Fried Movie" (1977).

After his acting career slowed in the late 1970s, Lazenby pursued business interests, particularly in real estate. His recent retirement marks the end of a long and colourful career for the former model and Bond star.
