IndieVisible Launches Accessibility Training for Disabled Filmmakers
As the film industry grapples with calls for greater inclusivity in the wake of recent strikes, IndieVisible Entertainment has launched a groundbreaking production accessibility training programme.
The QueerCrip production company announced its "Access Instigators" initiative on Friday, seeking ten disabled trainees from diverse backgrounds for its inaugural cohort. The eight-month pilot program, funded by the Pop Culture Collaborative Fund, aims to equip participants with the essential skills and experience needed for immediate employment in professional film productions.
The comprehensive training programme covers a wide range of topics, providing trainees with a thorough understanding of production accessibility from development to exhibition. The curriculum includes one-on-one mentoring sessions, practical on-set experience, and opportunities to network with industry leaders and peers. Participants will gain valuable knowledge and skills, preparing them for fulfilling careers in the media sector.
"Disabled creatives have long championed the integration of accessibility into their production processes," IndieVisible stated in a press release. "The COVID-19 pandemic and recent union strikes have brought to light the urgent need for broader industry change beyond simply benefiting disabled individuals. Applications for the "Access Instigators" program are now open and will be accepted until 10 September. Interested candidates can submit their applications online through the provided Google form.
Founded in 2018, IndieVisible has established itself as a leading voice for disability representation in the film industry. The company's recent credits include the Emmy-nominated Apple TV+ series "Best Foot Forward" and the documentary rom-com "Patrice: The Movie," which spotlights disability rights activist Patrice Jetter and premieres next month at the Toronto International Film Festival.
