Hiddleston's Paris Charm Divides Olympic Viewers

Tom Hiddleston's appearance in a video montage during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris sparked a debate among BBC One viewers. The 43-year-old actor, known for his role as Loki in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, was filmed strolling through the sunny streets of Paris, speaking directly to the camera about the significance of the event.

In a blend of English and French, Hiddleston reflected on the history of the Olympics, stating: "This is a story which is 100 years in the making and the next chapter of it starts here, in Paris, the city of love. Because it all starts with love. The Olympic journey begins with the things you don't see... The early wakeups and having someone who believes in you..." As he spoke, clips of diverse athletes from various nations competing in different sports were shown to viewers.

While some viewers found Hiddleston's words about the sporting spectacle inspirational, others questioned his inclusion in the segment. On social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, one viewer wrote: "Huh? Has the BBC done this Tom Hiddleston part or is this France's effort??#" Another user added: "Why have the BBC pissed money up the wall sending Tom Hiddleston to Paris to witter inanely?"

Some viewers even suggested the BBC should have chosen a French celebrity like Gérard Depardieu to represent the host city. A sarcastic user quipped: "Yes but who among us can HONESTLY say that, when they think of the metropolitan city of Paris, the first name that springs to mind isn’t Tom Hiddleston?"

Despite the criticism, other viewers were delighted to see Hiddleston on their screens. "Ooh the wonderful Tom Hiddleston kicking off the #2024Olympics with style - fabulous start #BBCOlympics," one fan wrote. Another shared: "I’ve got goosebumps already and it’s just Tom Hiddleston wandering around Paris being smooth, charming and handsome. #Paris2024."

Following Hiddleston's voiceover, presenter Clare Balding joined guests in the studio to discuss the Olympics, which will continue until August 11.

The 2024 Olympics coverage is available to stream on BBC iPlayer over the coming weeks.
