Help Name Belfast Zoo's Newest Giraffe!

Belfast Zoo is inviting the public to help name their newest arrival – a precious baby Rothschild’s giraffe. Born on Sunday to mother Daisy, the male calf has already captured the hearts of visitors and staff alike.

The mother and baby have been spending quality time together in the giraffe house, allowing them to bond and grow closer. While the little one is growing strong, the zoo is asking for help in choosing the perfect name for this special addition.

The animal care team has compiled a shortlist of four potential names, each steeped in the rich history and landscape of Northern Ireland:

Ballybracken: A townland in County Down, known for its beautiful scenery.

Ballymoe: A townland in County Antrim, rich in natural beauty.

Ballytober: A townland in County Fermanagh, showcasing the region's unique charm.

Ballyrobert: A townland in County Antrim, renowned for its stunning landscapes.

Voting is open now and will close on Friday, July 26th at 4pm on the Belfast Zoo Facebook page.

Zoo manager Alyn Cairns expressed the significance of this birth, stating: "Rothschild’s giraffes are one of the most endangered of the giraffe subspecies. While giraffes are widespread across Africa, Rothschild’s giraffes are found only in small numbers within protected areas in Kenya and northern Uganda."

He continued, "Since we welcomed the species to Belfast Zoo in 1988, we have celebrated the arrival of over 40 calves. We are thrilled to welcome this new addition to our giraffe family.”

By participating in the naming contest, the public can contribute to the excitement surrounding this endangered species and celebrate the arrival of this precious calf. Belfast Zoo hopes that the chosen name will embody the spirit of conservation and highlight the importance of protecting these majestic animals.
