Gruffalo's Child Takes Centre Stage on Commemorative 50p Coin
The beloved character, The Gruffalo's Child, will feature on a new commemorative 50 pence coin, marking the 20th anniversary of the popular children's story's publication. Following in the footsteps of her father, The Gruffalo, who graced 50p coins in 2019, The Gruffalo's Child will be immortalised in a new collection of coins.
While these new coins will not enter general circulation, they will be available for purchase from The Royal Mint, starting at £12. Collectors can choose from a range of precious metal finishes, including a gold version for £99. Past Gruffalo coins have achieved significantly higher prices on resale platforms due to their limited availability, highlighting the potential investment value of these collectible items.
The design of the new coins portrays The Gruffalo's Child alongside the "mouse in the woods" from the story, with some versions featuring colour accents. Illustrator Axel Scheffler expressed his "honour" at the recognition bestowed upon The Gruffalo's offspring, while author Julia Donaldson described the coin's release as "wonderful".
The Gruffalo book series has achieved global success, selling over 18 million copies and being translated into over 100 languages. The books have earned numerous accolades since their debut, with an animated version of The Gruffalo's Child premiering on BBC One on Christmas Day in 2011.
"The heart-warming tale of The Gruffalo's Child has captivated readers since its release 20 years ago, and this year, the curious little monster finds a permanent home on a 50 pence piece," stated Rebecca Morgan, Director of Commemorative Coin at The Royal Mint.
The Royal Mint, a venerable British institution and the original producer of UK coins, has a rich history of showcasing beloved children's characters on its coinage. Previous releases have featured iconic figures such as Paddington Bear, The Snowman, and characters from Beatrix Potter's timeless works. The inclusion of The Gruffalo's Child continues this tradition, ensuring that these cherished stories remain a part of British cultural heritage for generations to come.
