Gilmour's New Love Affair: Pink Floyd Legend Embraces Gibson ES-335 for Latest Single

David Gilmour, synonymous with the Fender Stratocaster, has unveiled a surprising new musical companion: the Gibson ES-335. The British prog rock legend, set to release his first solo album in nine years, *Luck and Strange*, on September 6th, has fallen head over heels for the semi-hollow electric guitar, using it for the solo on his latest single, *Dark and Velvet Nights*.

Gilmour, renowned for his iconic black Strat and considered one of the greatest guitarists of all time, describes the ES-335 as a "very different" instrument compared to his usual arsenal. He's not wrong. The Strat's snappy, bitey tone, which dominated Pink Floyd's sound and fetched a record-breaking price at auction in 2019, is a far cry from the warm, thick humbucker-driven sound of the ES-335.

This newfound affection for the Gibson, which Gilmour acquired recently for "a different tone, a different thing," has sparked a touch of regret in the guitar legend. He confesses, "I don't know why I didn't discover one of these a long time ago." The ES-335, he says, has "a real beauty" that has even inspired a new song.

*Dark and Velvet Nights

embodies its namesake, delivering the most melancholic and Floydian track yet from the album. Gilmour's signature solo, infused with the ES-335's distinct character, adds a new layer to his already masterful playing.

The single follows *Piper’s Call*, which featured a one-and-a-half minute solo, and *Between Two Points*, featuring a guest appearance by Gilmour's daughter, Romany. *Luck and Strange*, Gilmour's first solo effort since 2015, promises to be a testament to his musical evolution and exploration, as he embraces a new sonic palette alongside his legendary instruments.

Gilmour's latest album is set to be a triumph, showcasing his artistry and the continued power of his music. The addition of the Gibson ES-335 to his sonic tapestry adds another fascinating chapter to his legendary career, proving that even after decades, innovation and a thirst for new sounds remain at the heart of his artistry.

*Luck and Strange

is available for pre-order now and will be released on September 6th.
