Northern Irish broadcasting legend Julian Simmons is swapping the studio for the dancefloor, embarking on a new career as a DJ.
For decades, Simmons has been a familiar face on UTV, entertaining viewers with his warm delivery and iconic "but now on the UTV" catchphrase. Now, he's embracing a different kind of stage, bringing his unique blend of charm and musical taste to the DJ booth.
His debut gig is set for Saturday, as part of Belfast Pride Festival's "party in the square" at Custom House Square. Simmons draws inspiration from his 90s holidays to Ibiza, promising a set that blends classic retro tracks with modern hits. He's even throwing in some familiar vocals from his iconic TV announcements, adding a touch of nostalgia to the mix.
The inspiration for his DJ journey can be traced back to his friend, Carolyn Stewart of U105. "I used to do Carolyn Stewart's show with her on a Friday," Simmons told BBC News NI. "Then I started to go to some of her gigs... She would leave me behind the decks to go down and talk to people or have a quick boogie. That's how I started to learn how to mix songs and change tracks."
Simmons' transition from announcer to DJ is a testament to his adaptability and willingness to embrace new challenges. He has been honing his skills, learning from fellow DJs and spending hours behind the decks.
This Saturday, he's bringing his newfound talent to Belfast Pride, offering an unforgettable set that promises to get the crowd moving. His Ibiza-themed performance, complete with dancers, visuals and a touch of broadcasting magic, promises an electrifying mix of "good, banging Ibiza tunes." He even reveals his first song: "Rave Generator will probably be the first song," he says.
The free entry "party in the square" kicks off at 12:00 BST on Saturday, with Simmons taking the stage from 17:00 to 18:30. He's looking forward to sharing his passion for music with the crowd, embracing the "good vibes, nice atmosphere and darn good music."
While a little nervous, Simmons is confident in his abilities and his supporting team. He's ready to jump in with both feet, ready to entertain and share his love of music with the crowd. He's even planning to tour clubs and festivals later this year, solidifying his commitment to this new chapter in his career.
