Fortnite's Doctor Doom Season: A Marvel-ous Map Reveal

Epic Games has begun teasing its upcoming Doctor Doom-themed season for Fortnite, marking the second time the popular battle royale has embraced a Marvel-inspired theme. The latest reveal, showcasing the map adorned with a green, Doom-infused fog, gives players a sneak peek into what awaits them on 16 August.

The first glimpses of the new season emerged from the Doctor Doom trailer, unveiled earlier this month. The cinematic showcased a collection of Marvel heroes, some familiar and others new to the Fortnite universe. The trailer highlighted a mix of characters, including Jonesy Captain America, Peely Wolverine, and Sabertooth Meowscles, hinting that the battle pass will feature numerous Fortnite-inspired Marvel variants alongside traditional Marvel characters.

While Doom himself has previously been introduced as a skin, this upcoming season promises a new variation. Other prominent figures seen in the trailer include Emma Frost, Shuri Black Panther, and an X-Men ’97-style bundle featuring the iconic ’90s iterations of Colossus, Cyclops, and Jubilee. Rounding out the cast are appearances from Gwenpool, War Machine, and surprisingly, Mysterio, adding a villainous touch to the roster.

This eclectic mix of characters underscores the abundance of Marvel skins already incorporated into Fortnite, making it the game with the most skins from a single IP by a considerable margin. Many of the season's key reveals were showcased at Disney's D23 event, further solidifying the growing connection between Fortnite and the Disney universe.

Disney's involvement extends beyond the Marvel realm, as Fortnite has also featured collaborations with Star Wars. Interestingly, Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, is reported to have used the Galactus world-eating event in Fortnite as inspiration for the character's appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The event, which will feature Ralph Ineson as the voice of Galactus, is a testament to the growing influence of Fortnite on popular culture.

This season will also introduce a range of Marvel-themed weapons, including Captain America's shield and a Doom blast. Historically, such powerful weapons have often caused temporary disruptions in game balance, prompting players to anticipate potential gameplay shifts.

While the Doctor Doom season coincides with the announcement of Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom in a future Disney project, it's unclear if this is a calculated move or mere coincidence. Given the close relationship between Epic Games and Disney, the timing might seem suspect, but it's worth noting that both the season and Downey Jr.'s reveal were planned in advance.

However, considering that Disney previously used a Fortnite event to preview Emperor Palpatine's arrival in the new Star Wars trilogy, it's not entirely out of the realm of possibility that these two events could be connected in some way. The unexpected nature of such a crossover highlights the unique and ever-evolving relationship between Fortnite and Disney.

The upcoming Doctor Doom season promises a vibrant blend of iconic Marvel heroes and intriguing Fortnite-specific variations. With its diverse cast of characters, signature weapons, and ties to the broader Disney universe, this season is set to be a memorable one for Fortnite players, regardless of their connection to the Marvel universe.
