Emmy Nominations 2024: "The Bear" and "Shōgun" Lead the Pack

The 2024 Emmy Awards season is officially underway, with nominations being announced Wednesday morning by Tony Hale ("Veep"), Sheryl Lee Ralph ("Abbott Elementary"), and Television Academy chair Cris Abrego.

FX's historical drama "Shōgun" is expected to be a major contender in the drama race, while Season 2 of "The Bear" – a breakout hit last year – is poised to dominate the comedy categories. Netflix's viral sensation "Baby Reindeer" is also a strong contender in the limited series/anthology category.

Drama Series Contenders

Other notable contenders in the drama category include:

Disney+'s "Ahsoka"

Netflix's "The Crown" and "3 Body Problem"

Prime Video's "Fallout" and "Mr. and Mrs. Smith"

Apple TV+'s "The Morning Show"

Comedy Series Contenders

In the comedy field, the following shows are expected to be in the running for Emmy gold:

Hulu's "Only Murders in the Building"

HBO/Max's "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and "Hacks"

Apple TV+'s "Loot"

Netflix's "The Gentlemen"

FX's "What We Do in the Shadows"

A Unique Emmy Season

This Emmy season is unique in that it follows closely on the heels of the 2023 awards ceremony, which was held in January due to the Hollywood strikes. This year, the nominees are ready to hit the campaign trail again, unlike last year, where uncertainty surrounding the strikes dampened the usual excitement.

Fewer Submissions and Nominations

The Television Academy received 229 total series submissions for the key drama, comedy, and limited/anthology categories in 2024, a 33% decrease from last year. This reduction is attributed to a decline in production volume and the impact of last year's strikes. As a result, several categories have fewer nominations.

Notable Emmy Rule Changes

This year saw a few minor changes to Emmy rules. Notably, the scripted variety category underwent a change in methodology, becoming a juried competition due to the limited number of submissions.

Emmy Ratings and the Upcoming Ceremony

The 2023 Emmy telecast, held in January, recorded record-low ratings, likely due to competition from an NFL playoff game. Despite the low viewership, the ceremony received critical acclaim for its nostalgic tribute to classic television shows.

The 76th Emmy Awards will be broadcast live on ABC from the LA Live Peacock Theatre in downtown Los Angeles on Sunday, September 15, from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET/5 p.m. to 8 p.m. PT. The broadcast will be available to stream on Hulu the following day.
