Elsbeth's Bags: More Than Just Accessories

Elsbeth's Bags: More Than Just Accessories

Elsbeth Tascioni, the quirky, eccentric character played by Carrie Preston on CBS's "Elsbeth", is known for her signature accessory: three bags. But these bags are more than just a fashion statement, they represent Elsbeth's unique mind and approach to problem-solving.

Preston revealed at the Television Critics Tour that the bags were an idea from "The Good Wife" executive producer Brooke Kennedy. The intention was to showcase Elsbeth's chaotic yet brilliant mind. "She needs to always be carrying a bunch of things," Preston explained. "We got very specific about what those bags were. She won’t carry a briefcase. She doesn’t think of herself in that way. They became a fun accessory. She has bags in her brain, she has Rolodexes in her brain. She’s picking out little things that she put there 20 years ago, and she’s like ‘I can use that here.'"

The bags are filled with items Elsbeth believes she might need to help her with her work, and their presence reflects her unique approach to problem-solving. While the contents remain a mystery to viewers, Preston has noticed a fascination with them. "I find it fascinating how many people are interested in what is in the bags," she said. "But are you interested in what is in her brain too?"

However, the bags aren't always present. Preston explained that there are key moments in the show where Elsbeth forgoes the excess baggage. "I’ve made the choice in Elsbeth that once I have got a killer and I’m ready to go in and frame them, I don’t have the bags," she said. "You’ll notice in the show, in those final scenes when I come in to arrest the murderers, I don’t need those bags anymore."

This absence of the bags symbolizes Elsbeth's focused and decisive nature when it comes to solving cases.

Preston also discussed the significance of Elsbeth's unique style. "She’s a fish out of water," Preston said. "That’s a good thing to always have in mind. She’s not really a detective. People will see the way she’s dressed and they think they don’t have to take her seriously — at their peril. That’s definitely by design. She stands out from all the other detectives on television. This isn’t your normal police procedure. That’s what makes it extremely special."

Elsbeth's unconventional style and unconventional methods make her a captivating character. The bags serve as a constant reminder of her unique mind and approach to life.

"Elsbeth" returns for its second season on Thursday, October 17th at 10 p.m. ET, following the premiere of "Matlock."
