Edinburgh Fringe: A Love Story in Song - "The Scot and The Showgirl"

This year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival sees the world premiere of *The Scot and The Showgirl*, a charming love story that unfolds through music. The show stars Tony Award-winner Frances Ruffelle (renowned for roles in *Les Misérables

and *Closer to Heaven*) and West End star Norman Bowman (known for his appearances in *Mamma Mia* and *The Bodyguard*).

Together, Ruffelle and Bowman celebrate their unique romance with a vibrant live band, performing a heartwarming jukebox song cycle. The repertoire spans a delightful range, from the Scottish classic *Brigadoon

to Broadway favourites, incorporating Sondheim alongside Costello, Bacharach, The Proclaimers, and many more. The captivating arrangements are the work of David Barber, with musical director Ryan McKenzie on piano, Kate Shortt on cello, and David Kerr on drums.

From the outset, the packed audience provides a lively atmosphere, with Ruffelle and Bowman exuding confidence and stage presence. Their natural chemistry is evident, and their voices beautifully complement each other. The duo clearly knows how to engage their audience, creating a warm and intimate connection.

The show's simple concept involves guiding the audience through their "perfectly imperfect" relationship, highlighting the joys and challenges they have faced over 28 years, all through the power of song. While the pace is somewhat brisk, the story remains easy to follow. Despite minimal dialogue, the carefully chosen songs effectively convey the emotional journey. The duet "Something Good" from *The Sound of Music

is a particularly captivating and loving performance, while Bowman's solo rendition of "A House is Not A Home" leaves many audience members visibly moved.

The show culminates with a joyous rendition of "500 Miles," bringing the audience together in a rousing finale. The energy is infectious, leaving everyone with a smile on their face.

Overall, *The Scot and The Showgirl

provides an hour of delightful entertainment. With its charming story, talented performers, and captivating music, this show is a must-see for anyone attending the Fringe Festival.
