Crypto Queen Mystery Docuseries Sells to 31 Territories
The captivating docuseries, "Fugitive: The Mystery of the Crypto Queen," detailing the life of Ruja Ignatova, one of the world's most wanted women, has been sold to 31 territories worldwide.
The series delves into the story of Ignatova, the founder of the fraudulent cryptocurrency scheme, OneCoin. Ignatova is the only woman on the FBI's top 10 Most Wanted list. The synopsis highlights her notoriety, stating, "Only one fraudster has made both the FBI and Interpol's 2022 Most Wanted lists." After exploiting the cryptocurrency boom in "one of the biggest scams in history," Ignatova vanished without a trace, taking billions of dollars with her. The world is now eager to uncover her whereabouts.
Filmed across North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa, the docuseries offers a comprehensive look at the case. Written and directed by Rudolph Herzog ("Last Exit: Space") and Raid Sabbah ("How to Fake a War"), the film features interviews with victims and experts, painting a compelling portrait of Ignatova's life and the impact of her alleged crimes.
DARE Pictures and Tondowski Films are producing the series, with Fremantle co-investing and handling global sales outside the UK and Germany. Jens Richter, CEO for commercial and international at Fremantle, expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, "'Fugitive: The Mystery of the Crypto Queen' is an intriguing documentary that offers a fascinating look into the notorious life of Ruja Ignatova, one of the world's biggest crypto scammers." He further highlighted the widespread interest in the series, citing its sales across numerous markets including DR in Denmark, MTV OY in Finland, VRT in Belgium, and Docu TV Channel in Eastern Europe.
The documentary, executive produced by Derren Lawford for DARE Pictures and Alex Tondowski for Tondowski Films, will premiere in the UK on Channel 4 from July 23 to 25.
