Croatian-Portuguese Short Film Wins Big at Curtas Vila do Conde
A collaboration between Portugal and Croatia has taken home the top prize at the 32nd edition of the Curtas Vila do Conde short film festival.
"That's How I Love You" ("Tako te volim" in Croatian), directed by Portuguese filmmaker Mário Macedo, captured the hearts of the jury with its powerful story and masterful execution. The 18-minute film, shot entirely in Croatia with a Croatian cast, tells the poignant tale of a child learning a harsh lesson while on holiday at his grandparents' rural home.
The jury praised the film for its subtle and intelligent approach, deftly building tension within a world where tenderness and cruelty exist side-by-side. They highlighted the film's ability to explore the complexities of childhood growth and the multifaceted nature of love.
"The film allowed us time to understand growth and how love emanates," the jury stated. "It is a playful film that brought us joy and will remain with us and the audience with whom we shared the screening."
"That's How I Love You" was not the only film to receive recognition.
"Les animaux vont mieux" by Nathan Ghali (France) earned the Best Animated Short Film award.
"Very Gentle Work" by Nate Lavey (USA) was crowned Best Documentary.
"Pandarilo" by Marcela Heilbron (Panama) took home the Best Fiction award.
In the National Short Film Competition, the top prize went to "Rinha" by Rita M. Pestana.
