Clarkson's Cotswolds Pub Seeks Licence Expansion for First Floor Bar

Jeremy Clarkson, the former Top Gear presenter and owner of Diddly Squat Farm in Chadlington, has submitted plans to expand The Windmill, a pub he recently acquired near Burford, Oxfordshire. The proposal, a variation to the existing licence already granted, aims to create a new bar on the first floor, expand the licensed outdoor area, and include a permanent, fixed tent.

According to documents submitted to West Oxfordshire District Council, the application, made by Baobab Operations, seeks to "update the floor plans to include a bar on the first floor, extend the licensable area outside the premises and include a temporary tent in a fixed location."

Earlier this year, Clarkson outlined the extensive renovation needed at The Windmill, noting issues such as a cramped cellar, a crumbling gable end, dangerous decking, unsafe water supply, a rat-infested loft, and non-compliant toilets. It is unclear whether the proposed licence changes are intended to address these concerns or are part of a larger expansion project.

The council has confirmed receipt of the licence variation application and will initiate a 28-day public consultation period. Following the consultation, the council will make a decision on the application, adhering to national guidelines and considering any feedback received.

This application marks another development in Clarkson's foray into the hospitality sector. While his Diddly Squat Farm has drawn attention and controversy, his plans for The Windmill demonstrate his continued investment in the Cotswolds area. The proposed changes, if approved, could significantly alter the pub's character and attract greater attention from visitors and locals alike. The public consultation period provides an opportunity for the community to voice their views on the proposed licence changes and their potential impact on the historic pub.
