Cinematic Soundscapes: A Night of Film Music at the BBC Proms

The iconic BBC Proms continue their summer-long celebration of music with a captivating evening dedicated to the world of film soundtracks. Tonight, Wednesday 14 August, the Royal Albert Hall will host Prom 34, "Reel Change: Soundtracks at the Cutting Edge," featuring the London Contemporary Orchestra under the baton of Robert Ames.

This special concert promises a thrilling journey through the sonic landscapes of modern cinema, showcasing music from some of the most acclaimed and innovative films of recent years.

Prom goers will be treated to a performance of the Oscar-winning score for "All Quiet on the Western Front," composed by Volker Bertelmann. This haunting and powerful score captures the desolation and brutality of the First World War, earning Bertelmann international recognition.

But the evening is far from a purely historical affair. A selection of contemporary soundtracks will also be featured, highlighting the evolving and experimental nature of music in film. Hildur Guðnadóttir's score for "Tár," a film that explores themes of ambition, power, and the complexities of the human condition, promises to be a highlight. Isobel Waller-Bridge's music for "The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse," a moving animated adaptation of the beloved children's book, offers a contrasting, gentler touch.

The diverse programme continues with excerpts from Anna Meredith's score for "The End We Start From," Son Lux's music for "Everything Everywhere All at Once," and Jung Jae-il's compelling score for the hit TV series "Squid Game." The latter, notably, incorporates classical works by Beethoven, Haydn, and Johann Strauss II alongside Jung's own original compositions. The concert will conclude with a performance of Max Richter's contemplative and moving piece, "On the Nature of Daylight."

Prom 34 begins at 7.30pm. Tickets are priced between £11 and £54, with the ever-popular "Prommer" option available for £8, offering a chance to join the queue for a last-minute ticket.
