Melton Mowbray campaigner and paralympic torchbearer Claire Lomas has sadly passed away following an accident in Jordan.
The 44-year-old, known for her tireless fundraising efforts for spinal injury charities, died on 22 August, her family confirmed in a statement to the Melton Times. They expressed their "absolute devastation" at her loss.
Lomas's life was forever changed in 2007 when a horse riding accident left her with serious injuries, including a broken neck, back and ribs, as well as a punctured lung. Despite this life-altering event, she became a beacon of hope and inspiration for those living with spinal injuries.
Undeterred by her physical limitations, Lomas embarked on a series of remarkable fundraising challenges. She famously completed the 2012 London Marathon in a robotic suit, raising significant funds for Spinal Research. Her dedication and spirit also saw her chosen to light the Paralympic flame at the 2012 Games, a moment that captivated the nation.
Lomas's tireless work earned her an MBE in 2017 for her services to charity. She was a vocal advocate for those with spinal injuries, using her own experiences to motivate and inspire others.
Tara Stewart, Chair of the Spinal Research charity, described Lomas as "a great supporter... and a guiding light to the entire community."
The Nicholls Spinal Injury Foundation, one of Lomas's beneficiaries, echoed these sentiments, highlighting her "exceptional motivational speaking" skills and her ability to "change people's thinking and focus on the positive."
Councillor Tim Webster, Mayor of Melton Mowbray, added: "Claire was a very positive person and worked tirelessly to not let anything get in her way to raise the awareness of spinal injuries." He recognised Lomas's significant impact, stating: "Her drive and passion for this cause helped change the lives of many people who have suffered spinal injuries, and she will be sadly missed."
The Melton Times has been instructed by Lomas's family to request that other media outlets refrain from contacting them until further notice.
The Foreign Office has confirmed that they are providing support to Lomas's family following her death in Jordan.
The passing of Claire Lomas marks a significant loss for the community and beyond. Her legacy of resilience, determination, and kindness will continue to inspire countless individuals for years to come.
