Cake That's No Joke: Walsall Baker's Deadpool & Wolverine Sculpture Wins Reynolds' Heart
A Walsall baker has captured the attention of Ryan Reynolds, with her incredible life-size cake sculpture of Deadpool and Wolverine, recreating the iconic Dirty Dancing lift.
Lara Mason, a baker with 13 years of experience, spent over 120 hours crafting the masterpiece, which stands over 3 meters tall and is made from almost 300 kilograms of ingredients. This impressive feat isn't her first rodeo; Mason has created similar sculptures of celebrities like Harry Styles, Ed Sheeran, and even Queen Elizabeth II, but this one truly takes the cake.
Her dedication to detail is evident in the intricate modeling, capturing the essence of the two Marvel superheroes. The cake was initially covered in chocolate ganache and then sculpted using modeling chocolate, before being painted and finished with airbrushing.
"This is probably one of the most complicated cake designs I've ever made," Mason said. "I really like sculpting people, so this was a really fun challenge for me."
The creation went viral after Mason shared videos of the process on TikTok and Facebook. Her viewers took notice and began tagging Ryan Reynolds, who plays Deadpool, in the comments. Mason was shocked when she discovered that he had reposted her video on his Instagram stories with the caption, "Wha?! How?!"
Mason's dedication to her craft shines through in her resourcefulness. The cake is made from leftover sponges from customer orders, minimizing food waste. The final stage of the project presented its own set of challenges. The Deadpool cake had to be lifted and placed atop the Wolverine cake using a winch, requiring careful maneuvering to achieve the desired pose.
"That was the super complicated part," she explained. "We had to lift the Deadpool sculpture with a winch. Thankfully, this part went really well, and we lifted him almost up to the ceiling. Then we could slide the Wolverine cake in underneath and wiggle it on. After weeks and weeks of trying to figure out how on earth we'd be able to do this, weeks of putting the cake together, it happened. I've never been more proud of a cake."
The creation was timed perfectly for the release of the superhero film "Deadpool & Wolverine" on Thursday, making it a truly remarkable celebration of the film and a testament to Mason's exceptional baking skills. Her incredible talent and dedication have not only earned her the admiration of her local community but also the recognition of one of Hollywood's biggest stars, proving that even in the digital age, a truly exceptional creation can still go viral.
