Bum Bum Train Back on Track: Legendary Immersive Theatre Returns to London in 2024
The iconic and much-loved immersive theatre show, "You Me Bum Bum Train", is set to return to London after a hiatus of eight long years. Created by the visionary duo Morgan Lloyd and Kate Bond, the show was last seen in 2016, before the pandemic forced its cancellation in 2020.
"It was heartbreaking, almost the end," admits Lloyd, reflecting on the 2020 setback. "But in the end, it wasn't the end." This time, "Bum Bum Train" is back in its original, classic form, with a renewed commitment to the unique community that has grown around it.
"Two things drove us to bring the show back," explains Lloyd. "One, we had these incredible creative ideas, one in particular, that we simply couldn't shake. It felt like a responsibility to make it happen. And second, we deeply valued and mourned the loss of the community that comes together to make the show possible."
"You Me Bum Bum Train" is an immersive experience unlike any other. One audience member at a time embarks on a journey through a series of rooms, each one placing them at the centre of a different, fantastical scenario. The exact nature of these scenarios is a closely guarded secret, but the cumulative effect is described as a joyous rollercoaster ride through deliriously happy dreams.
Each scenario is brought to life with lavish sets and a cast of volunteer performers. The show's very existence hinges on this dedicated army of volunteers, both performers and crew. "YMBBT" isn't just our show," says Lloyd, "it belongs to the entire community. Over the years, it's become something much bigger than us, and we're mindful of how much it means to everyone."
The show has a track record of positively impacting the lives of those involved. "We've seen firsthand how 'YMBBT' has transformed people's lives," Lloyd continues. "From the senior lawyer who became a successful stand-up comedian, to the university graduate who became Europe's top immersive production manager. There's a sense of responsibility, but it's also what drives us."
"You Me Bum Bum Train" will return in November, with the exact dates and location yet to be announced. Tickets will be available through a public ballot, opening at 10 am on 3rd September and running for two weeks until 9 pm on 17th September. Winning the ballot guarantees you the option to purchase a ticket. Previous ticket sales have been more popular than Glastonbury, so a philosophical mindset is recommended.
The show wouldn't be possible without its dedicated community of volunteers. While there are some complaints about the reliance on unpaid labour, it's worth noting that the volunteers are enthusiastic and committed. There's no need for a massive time commitment, with opportunities for occasional shifts available. Aside from the CV-building opportunities, it's the only way to experience the show without being a passenger.
Ultimately, "You Me Bum Bum Train" holds the title of London's most exclusive ticket. But if you're keen to be a part of this unique theatrical phenomenon, there are ways to be involved.
