Bieber's "Cold Water" Almost Went to Sam Smith

Sam Smith revealed they turned down the opportunity to record Major Lazer's 2016 hit "Cold Water," a song that eventually became a global sensation featuring Justin Bieber and MØ.

During an interview on BBC Sounds' Sidetracked, the 32-year-old British singer-songwriter explained that they were offered the chance to sing on the track but were too busy at the time. "The only time I got sent a song that I heard and then became a well-known song was ‘Cold Water’ by Major Lazer with Justin Bieber," Smith shared. "They sent me that to sing, and at the time I was so busy and couldn’t do it, and we passed on it. But I’m happy I passed on it because Justin Bieber did it way better than what I would have done. It was made for him."

Smith acknowledged that the song was perfect for Bieber and that he ultimately delivered a superior version. "Cold Water," co-written by Ed Sheeran, was released in July 2016 and quickly climbed the charts, reaching No. 1 in several countries, including the United Kingdom, and No. 2 in the United States.

This isn't the first time Smith has shared insights into his career choices. Earlier this month, Smith revealed plans to release a 10th-anniversary edition of their debut album, *In the Lonely Hour*. This special edition will feature a re-recorded version of their hit single "Stay with Me," with a significant lyrical change reflecting their non-binary gender identity. The original line "But I still need love / 'cause I'm just a man" will be replaced with "but I still need love, baby understand," a change that Smith feels is important to reflect their personal journey.

"The meaning of this song changes for me whenever I sing it," Smith said. "The words ‘Stay with Me’ can mean a million different things and follow me throughout my life like an old friend."

Sam Smith is currently on a European tour, with performances scheduled throughout September. Despite the success of "Cold Water" and the upcoming anniversary release of *In the Lonely Hour*, Smith continues to push boundaries and evolve their music, showcasing their growth and dedication to artistic authenticity.
