Bennifer's Second Chance Ends: Jennifer Lopez Files for Divorce from Ben Affleck

Jennifer Lopez and her husband, Ben Affleck, are officially calling time on their marriage, as confirmed by an entry on the Los Angeles Superior Court docket. Lopez filed for the dissolution of their two-year union on Tuesday, marking a bittersweet anniversary of their lavish wedding in Riceboro, Georgia, in 2022. The couple had previously eloped in Las Vegas a month earlier.

The news of their separation comes after reports of the pair living apart, Lopez's decision to cancel her summer tour to spend time with her family, and the listing of their Beverly Hills home for sale. CNN has contacted representatives for both Lopez and Affleck for comment.

This divorce marks another chapter in the long-running love story between two of Hollywood's biggest names, a tale that has played out in the public eye for decades. The couple first met on the set of the 2002 comedy "Gigli", where they portrayed criminals stuck on a job together, sparking a real-life friendship that blossomed into a relationship.

Throughout the years, both Lopez and Affleck went on to marry other partners and build families. However, "Team Bennifer" rejoiced when the duo rekindled their romance in 2021, sparking a wave of nostalgia and excitement amongst fans.

Both parties appeared ecstatic about their reunion, with Affleck sharing his thoughts on their rekindled relationship in December 2021. He told The Wall Street Journal: "One of the things I really value across all facets of my life now is that it was handled in a way that reflected that. My life now reflects not just the person that I want to be, but the person that I really feel like I am – which is not perfect, but somebody who tries very hard and cares very much about being honest and authentic and accountable. It’s hard to say who benefits more, without going into gossipy detail."

Their first engagement came in November 2002, with Affleck proposing with a custom 6.1-carat pink diamond ring from Harry Winston. He also starred as Lopez's love interest in her 2002 music video for the single "Jenny from the Block," which mirrored the intense paparazzi attention they received during their relationship.

Their September 2003 wedding plans were ultimately postponed, with the couple citing "excessive media attention" as the reason. Sources at the time told CNN that the pair were "taking a break."

In January 2004, the couple officially called off their engagement. The couple's reconciliation in 2021 felt like a fairy tale come true, especially after Lopez ended her engagement to baseball legend Alex Rodriguez just months earlier.

"I feel so lucky and happy and proud to be with him," Lopez told People magazine about reuniting with Affleck, weeks before he proposed a second time in April 2022. "It's a beautiful love story that we got a second chance."

Lopez's 2024 documentary "The Greatest Love Story Never Told" delved into the story behind her independently produced album "This Is Me… Now", exploring her decades-long journey towards self-love. In the film, Affleck acknowledged learning to "compromise" with Lopez regarding her desire for more openness about their private life.

More recently, the pair have been seen on opposite sides of the country. Lopez celebrated her birthday at the end of July with a "Bridgerton"-themed party that notably did not include Affleck among the guests.

Lopez shares two children with her ex-husband Marc Anthony, while Affleck has three children with his former wife Jennifer Garner.
