The enigmatic and mischievous Agatha Harkness, last seen trapped in the aftermath of WandaVision's Westview debacle, is about to make a dramatic return in the upcoming Disney+ series, 'Agatha: All Along'. The show, penned by WandaVision mastermind Jac Schaeffer, promises a dark and adventurous journey for the cunning witch, who finds herself in a peculiar predicament following her confinement.
"Then, this mysterious goth teen [played by Heartstopperâs Joe Locke] shows up in her life," Schaeffer reveals to Empire magazine, hinting at the catalyst for Agatha's newfound freedom. This mysterious newcomer, initially known only as "Teen" in the script, introduces Agatha to a path of magical self-discovery.
"Itâs his idea to travel the Witchesâ Road to get her power back," Schaeffer explains. "But in order to go on the Road, youâve got to get a coven together. So how does a witch that no-oneâs going to trust get a band of sisters together?"
This journey of self-redemption and power retrieval takes Agatha on a perilous quest, encountering an array of other magic-users and facing challenges along the way.
Locke, who plays the pivotal "Teen" character, describes him as a "familiar", a kind of assistant to the coven. "Teen is a big fan of witchcraft and witches, so for him to be taken under Agatha Harkness' wing and form a coven and go down the Witchesâ Road is his dream. Heâs fanboy-esque, and in his element. Which is very fun â because I was [too]!"
While the series will delve into darker magical elements and perhaps even the odd musical number, Locke also notes a playful tone that resonated throughout production. "Jac sent Kevin Feige a picture of the Witchesâ Road set and he replied, âOh my God, weâre making The Gooniesâ,â he recalls. "Thatâs what Iâd been saying â that we were making this adventure series."
As Agatha navigates the treacherous Witches' Road, viewers will be treated to a side of her they haven't seen before. Kathryn Hahn, who reprises her role as the titular character, reveals, âWeâve seen her with all her bravado and crazy confidence. So much of Agatha is performance. It was exciting to get to the kernel under the sass and sarcasm and taking pleasure in other peopleâs pain. Thereâs something broken under that, big-time.â
This exploration of Agatha's hidden vulnerabilities promises to offer a fresh and captivating perspective on the seemingly confident and manipulative witch.
Get ready to be spellbound once again by Agatha Harkness's unpredictable charm and potent magic as 'Agatha: All Along' premieres on Disney+ from 19 September.
