Deadly Roof Collapse at Dominican Republic Nightclub During Concert

A devastating incident at the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, has resulted in the tragic death of at least 15 people. The roof of the popular nightclub collapsed in the early hours of Tuesday morning during a concert by merengue singer Rubby Pérez.

Rescue workers are currently on-site, desperately searching for survivors beneath the rubble. Emergency services have transported over 100 injured individuals to local hospitals, with ambulances making multiple trips to cope with the scale of the disaster. The total number of injured is still being determined.

The cause of the collapse remains unclear. Witnesses inside the club reported that the incident occurred around 1 a.m. One of Rubby Pérez's band members described the scene, stating that the club was packed when the roof caved in, likening the sound to an earthquake.

Video footage from inside the Jet Set nightclub has emerged, showing concertgoers enjoying the music shortly before the collapse. In one recording, a man can be heard pointing out something falling from the ceiling, with Rubby Pérez also appearing to notice the issue. Moments later, the recording cuts out amidst screams and chaos.

The president of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, has conveyed his condolences to the families of the victims. Emergency Operations Centre (COE) Director Juan Manuel Méndez remains hopeful that survivors may still be found within the debris.
