Winter Driving Safety: Checking Your Tyres for Snow and Ice
With the first snowfall potentially just around the corner, ensuring your vehicle is winter-ready is paramount. Before the temperature plummets and the rain turns to snow, checking your tyres is crucial for safe winter driving, according to Chris O'Reilly, store manager at Discount Tire in Beavercreek, Ohio.
"Tyres and safety are inextricably linked," O'Reilly stressed. "They're what keeps you on the road. It's vital to ensure they have sufficient tread depth and aren't excessively aged. This ensures optimal traction and handling in challenging wet and icy conditions."
O'Reilly highlighted the significant impact of temperature on tyre pressure. For every 10-degree Fahrenheit drop, tyre pressure decreases by approximately 1 PSI. Furthermore, below 7°C (45°F), tyre traction begins to diminish noticeably, increasing the risk of skidding and accidents.
A simple at-home tyre check can be performed using the "penny test." "Insert a penny into the tread groove with Lincoln's head upside down," O'Reilly explained. "If you can see the top of his head, your tyres are worn and need replacing. Ideally, you should begin looking for replacements before reaching this critical point." This simple test provides a quick assessment of tread depth, a key indicator of tyre performance in winter conditions.
Beyond tyres, O'Reilly emphasised the importance of maintaining optimal visibility. Windscreen wipers are essential for safe driving, particularly during winter. He recommends replacing wiper blades every six months to prevent freezing, chipping, or breaking, which can significantly impair visibility. "Frozen or damaged wiper blades can compromise your ability to see the road ahead," he warned, "putting you and others at risk."
The consequences of neglecting essential winter vehicle checks can be severe. A proactive approach, however, can greatly reduce the likelihood of accidents and breakdowns. "Ensuring your vehicle is winter-ready is about more than just personal safety; it's about the safety of your family and other road users," O'Reilly concluded. Taking a few simple preventative measures can make a significant difference in ensuring a safe and trouble-free winter driving experience. These include regular tyre pressure checks, the penny test for tread depth, and timely replacement of worn tyres and windscreen wiper blades. By prioritising these checks, drivers can significantly improve their safety on winter roads.
