Chartham-based fruit growers are reporting an unexpected abundance of strawberries this summer, promising a juicy treat for British consumers. The cold and wet spring, followed by a recent heatwave, has pushed the peak harvest into late July and early August, resulting in a bumper crop.
Lee Port, chief executive of the Chartham growers, explained, âThe unusual weather patterns earlier in the year have shifted our predicted crop volume, leading to a significant increase in strawberries available in the coming weeks. Weâre expecting to see around 40 to 50 tonnes extra each week until the end of August.â
He added, âThe good news is that these strawberries are exceptionally large, juicy, and full of flavour.â
Nick Marston, chairman of British Berry Growers, echoed the sentiment of a successful season. âWhile the cold, wet weather and reduced sunlight in spring led to a delayed harvest, the strawberries have been worth the wait. The slower ripening period has allowed the fruit to develop its full flavour profile, resulting in particularly large and juicy berries.â
Marston continued, âIt's a fantastic year for British strawberries. The delayed harvest and excellent quality have combined to create a truly delicious treat for everyone. This is a positive sign for British berry growers, who are a crucial part of the UK economy.â
The UK's berry industry is booming, with year-round retail sales reaching a record £1.87 billion last year. This strong performance highlights the growing demand for locally grown produce and the importance of British berry growers in providing high-quality fruit to consumers throughout the year.
With the arrival of the bumper strawberry harvest, consumers can expect to see a plentiful supply of the summer fruit in shops and markets throughout August. The combination of abundant supply and exceptional flavour promises a truly delicious summer for strawberry lovers across the UK.
