Phoenix Unveils Hybrid Buses: A Step Towards Greener Public Transport

The City of Phoenix has taken a significant step towards cleaner, quieter public transportation with the launch of its first hybrid bus. This is the first of 20 new buses being introduced throughout the month, forming part of the city’s ambitious goal to achieve a zero-emissions bus fleet by 2040.

The new Flyer Xcelsior Hybrid-Electric buses, manufactured by New Flyer, are designed to significantly reduce emissions and noise pollution compared to traditional diesel buses. They feature a combination of hybrid motors, batteries, and a biodiesel-fueled engine, resulting in increased fuel efficiency.

These spacious buses, capable of accommodating 35 seated passengers and up to 53 with standing room, also boast three wheelchair areas and an impressive range of over 500 miles.

“Phoenix is proud to lead the charge towards a greener future where our residents can breathe cleaner air while getting them to their destinations," said Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego, highlighting the city's commitment to sustainable transport solutions.

Brenda Yanez, public information officer for the City of Phoenix Public Transportation Department, emphasised the need for buses suitable to the city’s unique environment: "We definitely want to make sure they are working in our elements. Phoenix is hot. We have a wide space than a lot of other cities, so we need to make sure that our buses are able to drive long distances.”

The city is actively exploring various technologies to achieve its green transportation goals, with plans for the introduction of fully electric buses in the coming year.

“We’re trying different technologies. We’re trying to do our part with the resources that we have to help our environment,” explained Yanez.

The purchase of these new buses is being partially funded by a federal grant, covering roughly 85% of the cost, with the remainder being provided by the city.

This initiative marks a significant milestone in Phoenix’s journey towards a more environmentally sustainable public transportation system, benefiting both residents and the environment.
