Password manager Dashlane has revealed a significant surge in passkey usage, indicating a growing embrace of this innovative, passwordless login technology. The company's latest report highlights a 400% increase in passkey authentications since the beginning of the year, with a remarkable 1 in 5 active Dashlane users now relying on at least one passkey for secure access.
This widespread adoption comes amidst a rapidly growing ecosystem of passkey-enabled websites and apps. While over 100 platforms now offer passkey support, a significant proportion of authentication activity (52%) is concentrated on the top 20 most popular apps. E-commerce giants like eBay, Amazon, and Target are leading the charge, with this sector accounting for a substantial 42% of passkey authentications. Interestingly, "sticky apps" â those frequently used for social media, e-commerce, finance, and payments â have seen the most rapid adoption of passkeys between April and June of this year.
Early adopters like eBay and Google, among the top 20 platforms, have played a crucial role in driving passkey adoption. However, some unexpected trends are emerging. While Roblox is the only gaming platform in the top 20, its passkey adoption has surpassed even prominent giants like Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and Adobe, suggesting a potential shift in user behaviour.
