NYK Charters First Methanol-Powered Bulk Carrier: A Step Towards Greener Shipping
The NYK Group, through its subsidiary NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers, has taken a significant step towards sustainable shipping by entering into a charter agreement with Kambara Kisen for a methanol dual-fuel bulk carrier. This marks the first time NYK will operate such a vessel.
The new ship, currently under construction in Japan and scheduled for delivery in 2025, will be equipped with a dual-fuel main engine capable of running on both methanol and fuel oil. It will primarily be fuelled by bio-methanol and e-methanol, derived from renewable hydrogen and recovered carbon dioxide, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This commitment to cleaner fuels aligns with NYK Group's broader goal of decarbonising its fleet and promoting clean transportation.
Beyond its eco-friendly credentials, the vessel boasts the largest loading capacity of an Ultramax bulker, offering impressive versatility. Its hull design allows for the transportation of various cargo, including grain and ore.
The key specifications of the vessel are as follows:
Length Overall (LOA): 200 metres
Breadth: 32.25 metres
Depth: 19.15 metres
Deadweight: 65,700 metric tons
Capacity: 81,500 cubic metres
Draft: 13.8 metres
The introduction of this methanol-powered bulk carrier represents a major milestone for NYK Group. By embracing innovative technology and clean fuel solutions, the company is actively contributing to the global transition towards a more sustainable maritime industry. This initiative sets a positive precedent for the future of shipping, showcasing the potential of methanol as a viable alternative to traditional fossil fuels.
