Mayflower's Yorkshire Excursion: Steam Locomotive's Christmas Journey

The iconic steam locomotive 61306 Mayflower is set to grace Yorkshire's railway lines this Saturday, 23rd November, pulling The Christmas White Rose train. This eagerly anticipated journey will see the powerful engine traverse a significant portion of the country, offering rail enthusiasts a rare opportunity to witness its majesty.

The day begins early. Departing Barrow-in-Furness at 05:17, initially hauled by a diesel locomotive, the train will pass through a series of stations including Dalton (05:27), Ulverston (05:39), Grange-over-Sands (05:54), Arnside (06:02), Carnforth (06:15), and Lancaster (06:25). At Preston (06:53), a significant change occurs: Mayflower is coupled to the rear of the train.

The journey continues through Wigan North Western (07:43) and Warrington Bank Quay (07:59), where the train reverses, allowing Mayflower to take the lead. Pulling the train from Warrington Bank Quay at 08:10, the locomotive will power through Earlestown (08:22), Manchester Victoria (08:48), Guide Bridge (09:16), Edale (10:20), Grindleford (10:34), Sheffield (10:49), and Moorthorpe (11:46), finally arriving in York at 12:21.

After a period in York, the train departs at 15:53, once again diesel-hauled with Mayflower attached to the rear. The route takes it through Church Fenton (16:08) to Gascoigne Wood Loop, where another reversal sees Mayflower assume its position at the head. From there, it will travel through Wakefield Kirkgate (16:48), Hebden Bridge (17:37), Todmorden (17:43), Rochdale (17:58), and Manchester Victoria (18:43), before reaching Newton-le-Willows (19:13) and Warrington Bank Quay (19:51).

The diesel locomotive then resumes its role, returning the train to Barrow-in-Furness via Wigan North Western (20:12), Preston (20:35), Lancaster (21:04), Carnforth (21:33), Arnside (21:47), Grange-over-Sands (21:55), Ulverston (22:12), and Dalton (22:23), arriving back at Barrow-in-Furness at 22:39.
