Magyar Telekom Sells Spectrum to Yettel in Hungary
Magyar Telekom has announced the transfer of its 2100 MHz spectrum to Yettel Hungary, a move aimed at optimising frequency utilisation and improving customer experience.
The transfer agreement, signed by both companies, involves two 5 MHz frequency blocks in the 2100 MHz band. These frequencies were granted to Magyar Telekom in December 2018 and were set to expire on 27 June 2027. The purchase price for the spectrum was set at the book value of the frequency block usage rights.
This transfer will not impact Magyar Telekom's customer service quality. However, the completion of the transaction is subject to approval by the National Media and Infocommunications Authority.
Furthermore, Magyar Telekom and Yettel have signed a 2G mobile access agreement. This agreement will allow Magyar Telekom to manage its customers' 2G traffic via services provided by Yettel Hungary, starting from 1 January 2026. This arrangement is expected to deliver efficient solutions in terms of both spectrum and energy usage.
Magyar Telekom plans to utilise the freed-up frequencies to strengthen and expand its 4G and 5G services, ensuring a high-quality customer experience. The financial impact of the agreement is not anticipated to be significant.
The spectrum transfer highlights Magyar Telekom's strategic focus on optimising its network infrastructure and ensuring future-proof connectivity for its customers. By freeing up valuable spectrum and partnering with Yettel, Magyar Telekom is positioning itself to deliver enhanced mobile services and a more competitive offering in the Hungarian market.
