IndiGo Celebrates Independence Day with 77 New Female Pilots

IndiGo, India's leading airline, has marked the 77th anniversary of India's Independence Day by inducting 77 female pilots into its Airbus and ATR fleets. This significant step towards diversity in aviation is a testament to the airline's commitment to equality and inclusion, embracing the #GirlPower ethos.

The induction includes 72 female pilots joining the Airbus fleet and 5 joining the ATR fleet, marking a notable milestone in aviation history. This initiative is expected to inspire future generations of women to pursue careers in aviation, breaking down traditional barriers.

The airline embarked on a targeted recruitment drive in January 2024, specifically seeking out female pilots to create an exclusive batch. This proactive approach highlights IndiGo's dedication to fostering a diverse and representative workforce.

Captain Ashim Mitra, Senior Vice President at IndiGo, expressed the airline's enthusiasm for the induction, stating, “We are delighted to announce the landmark induction of 77 female pilots into our Airbus and ATR fleet. At IndiGo, we have always promoted a workplace that thrives on diversity and inclusivity. We acknowledge and celebrate the invaluable contributions made by women at IndiGo, not just for their technical prowess but also as inspirational leaders within our organization. We firmly believe that diversity and inclusion are not just integral to our core values, but they are also key drivers of innovation and growth. We pledge to continue upholding these values in all our endeavours.”

Beyond this significant hiring initiative, IndiGo has also introduced "life cycle" programmes designed to provide flexibility for female pilots with children under five years old. This allows them to choose a reduced flying contract, addressing the traditionally skewed gender ratio in cockpit crews and paving the way for a more diverse and inclusive aviation industry in the years to come.

IndiGo stands as a global leader in diversity, boasting around 14% women pilots compared to the global average of 7-9%. This commitment to inclusivity showcases the airline's dedication to creating a more representative and equitable future for aviation.
