East Coast Train Drivers to Strike on Weekends in Ongoing Dispute

LNER train drivers will stage a series of strikes on weekends from the end of August, impacting services between London and Edinburgh, in a dispute over working agreements.

The action, separate from the ongoing pay dispute, will see members of the Aslef union walk out on every Saturday and Sunday from 1 September to 10 November, affecting a total of 22 days.

The dispute centres on disagreements over working agreements, with Aslef claiming LNER has consistently blocked attempts to settle the matter. The union's lead negotiator, Nigel Roebuck, described the situation as "toxic", highlighting low morale among members who feel their working conditions are not being respected.

"We work within agreements, we jointly sign up to agreements. We make agreements, we don't break them," Roebuck stated. "When you get to the strike action decision, it's because all else has failed."

Roebuck expressed appreciation for the Transport Secretary, Louise Haigh, for her "adult" approach during pay negotiations, but criticised LNER for their handling of the working agreement dispute. He stressed that the strike action is not related to pay, but rather a separate issue that has been ongoing for two years.

"We put our members first and our members' mandate is on a separate issue which has been ongoing for two years," he added. "This dispute is not connected to the pay, it's about upgrading of our agreements."

LNER has expressed disappointment at the announcement of the strikes, stating that their priority is to minimise disruption to passengers. A spokesperson said: "We are surprised and disappointed to hear this news following recent constructive conversations. We will continue to work with Aslef to find a way to end this long-running dispute which only damages the rail industry."

The planned weekend strikes will undoubtedly cause significant disruption for passengers travelling on the East Coast main line. Travellers are advised to check LNER's website for updates on service alterations and potential cancellations during the strike period.
