Digital Cockpit Domain Controller Showdown: Aptiv Takes the Lead

Digital Cockpit Domain Controller Showdown: Aptiv Takes the Lead

ABI Research, a global technology intelligence firm, has released a comprehensive assessment of eleven Digital Cockpit Domain Controller (CDC) solution providers, ranking them based on innovation and implementation capabilities. The analysis delves into crucial factors driving the evolution of the digital cockpit, including domain consolidation, Over-the-Air (OTA) updates, modularity, full-stack provision, and component compatibility.

Aptiv and Harman Emerge as Leaders

The assessment categorised the companies into three tiers: Market Leaders, Mainstream, and Followers. Aptiv and Harman emerged as the top performers, showcasing their commitment to innovation and implementation excellence.

Aptiv secured the top spot by demonstrating a strong focus on domain consolidation, robust virtualisation and isolation capabilities, and seamless OTA update facilitation. Their impressive full-stack provision for CDCs further solidified their leadership position. Aptiv's commitment to scalability and a wide customer base contributed to their high ranking in implementation.

Harman secured the second position, excelling in modularity and component agnosticism, key factors driving innovation. Their strong regional coverage, extensive OEM partnerships across the globe, and scalable solutions catering to various vehicle segments contributed to their top performance in implementation.

The Rise of the Digital Cockpit

The report highlights the changing priorities of Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) regarding vehicle compute architecture. Tier One suppliers are increasingly adopting strategies to meet these evolving demands.

“A balanced approach of enabling simpler implementation through modularity, with strong investment into technical innovation, is a hallmark of the top performers in this competitive assessment," explains Abu Miah, Smart Mobility and Automotive Analyst at ABI Research.

Challenges and Opportunities for Other Players

The report underscores the importance of strategic partnerships and acquisitions for Mainstream vendors to enhance their position in the ecosystem. These partnerships can enable tighter integration with other digital cockpit components, ultimately strengthening their offering.

“Followers should focus on expanding their CDC offerings with strong positioning around secure and robust consolidation of domains, flexible and component agnostic platform design, and scalability to widen their value proposition to OEMs beyond a single vehicle segment,” concludes Miah.
