'Daylight Robbery': Parents Outraged by £6 Ice Cream Cones at Britain's 'Most Expensive' Van
Families visiting Wythenshawe Park in Manchester are expressing their anger over the exorbitant prices charged by a local Mr Whippy ice cream van, dubbed "Britain's most expensive." The van has sparked outrage for its seemingly excessive prices, with a basic 99 cone costing £3.95 and some treats topping out at £6.95.
The price list, shared widely on Facebook, has served as a warning to other parents to "steer clear with the kids." Many have taken to social media to express their disapproval, describing the prices as "unbelievable" and a "taking the p***." Some even reported seeing children crying because their families couldn't afford the treats.
"We seen so many kids the other day crying as their mum just couldn't afford it and didn't have it," said one resident. "Everyone is out to make a bit of profit but this is taking the p***."
Another resident echoed the sentiment, adding: "I understand they have a fee to pay for having that spot and need to cover that, but come on that is like festival prices and not even worth it."
A third parent commented: "How are families meant to go on cheap days out with them prices. Daylight robbery!!! He should be ashamed of him/herself."
One customer described a particularly shocking experience, stating that their bill for two ice creams came to a staggering £11.25. The ice cream van is located near the children's playground, making it a prime target for families looking for a sweet treat.
Following the outcry, Manchester City Council confirmed that they are "engaging with the operator" of the Royal Ices van, "addressing concerns" that have been raised. By Monday, prices had been lowered, with a standard waffle cone 99 now costing £3.25, or £2.75 without a Flake.
A Manchester Council spokesperson commented: "Affordability is a key strand of our assessment process for the procurement of partners. Through the contracting process we will work with operators to make sure their prices are fair and affordable for our residents."
This incident comes on the heels of a report earlier this year which highlighted the rising cost of popular ice cream brands, such as Cornetto and Solero. Consumer group Which? found that prices for these brands have soared by over a third in just two years. This trend, coupled with the exorbitant prices charged by the Mr Whippy van, raises concerns about the affordability of simple pleasures like ice cream for families, particularly those facing the current cost of living crisis.
