Darlington Station's New Concourse Completed: On Track for a £140 Million Transformation
The refurbishment of Darlington railway station is progressing as planned, with the completion of a new concourse. The Eastern concourse, a modern addition connected to the Grade II listed original station via an elevated walkway, marks a significant milestone in the £140 million redevelopment project.
The next phase, focused on the introduction of shops, is set to begin shortly. Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen expressed pride in the Eastern Concourse building's timely completion, stating that the refurbishment would provide Darlington passengers with the station they deserve and ultimately boost the number of services.
This ambitious project is a collaborative effort involving the Tees Valley Mayor and Combined Authority (TVCA), Network Rail, LNER, and Darlington Borough Council. It is expected to be fully completed by late 2025, coinciding with the 200th anniversary of the railways.
Network Rail's Luke Durston described the completion of the concourse as a "real 'handing of the baton' moment," signifying the progression of the project into its next phase.
Further enhancements to the station include two new platforms, a multi-storey car park, and a transport interchange. The TVCA has committed £43 million to the project, with Network Rail and the Department for Transport contributing £96 million.
Councillor Steve Harker, leader of Darlington Borough Council and TVCA cabinet member for transport, highlighted the significance of the project's completion next year, aligning with the 200th anniversary of the railways. He described it as "a timely tribute to the events of 1825."
The revitalised Darlington station promises to serve as a modern hub for the region, offering improved facilities for passengers and contributing to the area's economic growth and development.
