Julian Metcalfe, the co-founder of popular food chains Pret A Manger and Itsu, is joining the board of Knoops, the rapidly expanding chocolate-based drinks retailer. The move comes as Knoops seeks to raise £5 million to fuel its ambitious international growth plans.
Sky News understands that Metcalfe, already a shareholder in the company, will assume the role of non-executive director. He will join alongside Alice Avis, former chair and chief executive of the Sanctuary Spa Group, bringing a wealth of experience in the retail and hospitality sectors.
Andrew Gerrie, co-founder of the cosmetics chain Lush, is spearheading the fundraising effort. The capital will be used to support Knoops' overseas expansion, further solidifying its position as a leading player in the innovative beverage market.
Knoops, led by CEO William Gordon-Harris, currently operates 20 stores across the UK, with plans underway to open new outlets in cities such as Belfast and York. The brand has gained a loyal following for its unique chocolate-based drinks, offering a range of hot and cold beverages, from classic hot chocolate to more experimental concoctions.
Metcalfe expressed his enthusiasm for Knoops' potential, stating, "Knoops, like Itsu, is a pioneering confident brand with a sense of purpose and a passion for quality. They don't come around that often and I applaud their leadership and vision."
Avis echoed Metcalfe's optimism, noting, "I truly believe Knoops has found a real 'sweet spot' in the food and beverage market and with that has an exciting, international future ahead of it."
The appointments are expected to be officially announced on Monday, marking a significant milestone in Knoops' journey towards global domination. The injection of expertise from industry veterans like Metcalfe and Avis promises to accelerate their growth strategy and solidify their position as a leading force in the chocolate drinks market.
