Canyon CFR Helmets: Redefining Retention With Watt-Saving HighBar System

Canyon's latest CFR (Canyon Factory Racing) helmets are catching the eye of cycling enthusiasts, particularly those who have witnessed the brand's athletes dominating races across the globe. While the design might seem understated from afar, a closer look reveals a departure from the norm.

What sets these helmets apart? The answer lies in the innovative HighBar fit system, a subtle but game-changing element that directly addresses a critical issue in cycling safety: helmet fit.

Rethinking Helmet Retention

Most cyclists may assume they know how to size their helmets properly, but the problem often lies not in the size itself, but in the retention system – the straps and mechanisms that secure the helmet to the head. A helmet that becomes loose during a crash loses its protective capability, regardless of the safety technology incorporated. Canyon has tackled this issue with the HighBar system, which prioritises a secure and comfortable fit.

Introducing the Canyon CFR Helmet Line

The new Canyon CFR helmet line complements the recently released Canyon CFR shoes, providing a complete head-to-toe performance package for riders. Both helmet models and shoes are designed for pro-level performance across disciplines, including road, cross-country, ultra-distance mountain, and gravel.

Canyon CFR Helmet Models

The CFR helmet line features two models: the Disruptr, suitable for road, gravel, and mountain use, and the more aerodynamic Stingr. Both models employ the HighBar fit system, claimed to enhance helmet retention and contribute to a significant watt saving.

The HighBar System: Faster, Quieter, Cooler

Wind tunnel tests have revealed that the HighBar strap is 7 watts faster than a conventional strap at 50 km/h, a difference that could translate to a 10-20 watt saving at higher speeds, equating to a time gain of 33 seconds over 100km.

Beyond its aerodynamic benefits, the HighBar system also offers notable noise reduction. Traditional straps, particularly when fitted improperly, create wind noise. The rigid structure of the HighBar system eliminates this, allowing the strap to slice cleanly through the air. Wind tunnel tests demonstrate a significant reduction in sound levels at the ears, with a decrease of approximately 6-7.5dB compared to conventional helmet straps.

Counterintuitively, despite its rigid structure, the HighBar system also contributes to improved helmet ventilation. The strap doesn't touch the rider's skin, and the BOA-style enclosure mounted under the chin creates a space for air to circulate. Canyon claims that helmets equipped with HighBar are up to 4.8 degrees cooler than those with traditional webbing straps.

Canyon CFR Helmet Models: Disruptr and Stingr

The Disruptr CFR is a versatile helmet designed for road, gravel, and cross-country mountain riding. It features a magnetic port in the rear for attaching a Canyon rear light, providing extra safety for training and commuting. The light offers five modes and up to 30 hours of run time.

Disruptr CFR Specifications:

Colour Options: White, Black, and Grey

Weight: 275 g (M size/CE standard)

Price: £299.95

The Stingr CFR is a race-ready aero helmet built for maximum aerodynamic advantage. Canyon states that it weighs the same as the Disruptr, despite its streamlined design.

Stingr CFR Specifications:

Colour Options: White, and Black

Weight: 275 g (M size/CE standard)

Price: £299.95

Both the Disruptr and Stingr feature Mips Air Node crash protection and are available in Small, Medium, and Large sizes, exclusively through Canyon.com and the Canyon app.
