Cadbury has responded to growing calls for a revival of its iconic Spira chocolate bar, a unique treat fondly remembered for its spiral shape and innovative use as a drinking straw.
The chocolate giant, having sparked nostalgia with the recent relaunch of its Top Deck bar, has been inundated with pleas from fans eager to see the Spira return to shelves. Introduced in 1989 as a product of a new production process, the Spira was formed into a spiral shape, featuring six hollow tubes running through each bar.
This unusual design, as many fondly recall, allowed the bars to be used as a drinking straw, offering a unique and satisfying experience alongside hot drinks. One Money blog reader, writing under the name Oompahlumpa, reminisced: "Cadbury Spira was and remains the best chocolate bar ever. With experience, you can drink your hot drink through this chocolate straw, melt the inside perfectly and the outside will still be intact. It needs skill but it can only be achieved with the Spira."
Many readers echoed this sentiment, with Janette stating, "I'd just love to see a Cadbury's Spira back on the shelves. Great to eat, but also great to use as a drinking straw!"
This fervent desire for the Spira's return has even spawned numerous petitions and a dedicated Facebook page boasting over 35,000 followers. Despite the evident affection for the bar, Cadbury ceased production in 2005. In response to a customer query on X earlier this year, the company stated there were "no plans to bring back Spira."
However, following the recent wave of calls for a revival, Sky News reached out to Cadbury, who provided the following statement: "We continuously adapt our product range to ensure it meets changing tastes whilst supporting growth for our customers and our business," a spokesperson said. "Our Spira bars were discontinued several years ago but we still have plenty of other delicious sharing bags for consumers to choose from!"
While the statement acknowledges the discontinued status of the Spira, it falls short of offering any concrete plans for a return. It remains to be seen whether the nostalgic charm of the Spira and the passionate pleas from its devoted fans will sway Cadbury to reconsider its stance.
