Boosting Childhood MMR Vaccinations: Phreesia and the AAP Join Forces
Phreesia and the American Academy of Pediatrics team up to increase MMR immunisation rates, targeting parents and caregivers at the point of care.
WILMINGTON, Del. & ITASCA, Ill., 29 August 2024 â Phreesia, a leading provider of patient intake, outreach and activation solutions, and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), a professional organisation representing over 67,000 paediatricians, have joined forces to improve measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) immunisation rates. This collaborative initiative aims to reach parents and caregivers of children eligible or soon to be eligible for the MMR vaccine at the point of care. The campaign comes as immunisation rates have fallen in some communities, highlighting the need to increase access to these vital vaccines.
Through a joint campaign leveraging Phreesia's digital intake platform, the organisations will target caregivers of children aged between 9 months and 6 years who have either not started or not completed the MMR vaccination series. Educational content, developed by Phreesia's in-house creative team, will emphasise the AAP's recommendations for MMR immunisation and the importance of protecting children from preventable diseases.
"At Phreesia, we've witnessed firsthand the power of providing patients and caregivers with relevant, credible vaccine information at crucial moments in their healthcare journey," said David Linetsky, Phreesia's SVP of Life Sciences. "We're proud to partner with the AAP to deliver important vaccination education at the point of care and empower parents and caregivers to have meaningful conversations about immunisation with their child's doctor."
"The point of care is a key opportunity to reach busy parents and caregivers with vaccine reminders and up-to-date information," said Christina Suh, MD, MPH, a paediatrician and Director of Clinical Content at Phreesia. "We're thrilled to be able to provide MMR education to parents while they're checking in for their appointments and thinking about their child's health."
The AAP recommends that children receive their first MMR vaccine between 12 and 15 months of age. A second dose is also crucial at 4 to 6 years old, when most children start school. Despite the proven safety and efficacy of MMR vaccination since the 1950s, the national MMR vaccination rate for children entering kindergarten in the 2022-2023 school year stood at 93%. This translates to approximately 250,000 unvaccinated children entering school, falling short of the 95% coverage rate required for herd immunity.
"The American Academy of Pediatrics is committed to ensuring that children in every community have access to essential immunisations, such as the MMR vaccine, so they can grow and thrive," said Sean O'Leary, MD, MPH, FAAP, Chair of the AAP Infectious Disease Committee. "This includes making sure parents and caregivers have the information they need about their children's immunisations, and conversations with their paediatrician are a valuable starting point."
