Google Brings Gemini AI Overviews to Gmail Search Now
• AI Overviews, which summarize email threads, are expanding into Gmail search so natural-language queries return AI-generated summaries that cite relevant messages. • Google is previewing an experimental AI Inbox that surfaces "Priorities" and a "Catch me up" summary built by Gemini; rollout begins with trusted testers and is optional. • Proofreading powered by Gemini 3 will appear for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers; many previously premium AI features will trickle down to free Gmail users over time.
What Google announced
Google is rolling Gemini-powered features deeper into Gmail. The company said AI Overviews — the summarization tool that first appeared last year — will now appear inside Gmail search. Google is also previewing an AI-organized Inbox and new proofreading tools tied to its Gemini 3 models.
AI Overviews in Gmail search
Instead of returning a list of matching messages, Gmail search can now produce a formatted AI answer that summarizes results and cites the emails it used. Users can enter natural-language queries, for example to find details from a past quote or thread, and receive a concise overview.
Google warns that AI summaries can be imperfect; grounding output in a user’s own messages should reduce hallucinations, but accuracy will vary with context and email clarity.
AI Inbox: experimental, optional, and limited
The experimental AI Inbox groups unread mail into interactive sections. Gemini will surface "Priorities" for messages it deems important and a "Catch me up" section that summarizes less critical items. Google will test this with a small set of trusted testers before any wider release.
The company emphasizes the AI Inbox will be optional. However, there is no separate Gemini toggle — the assistant is folded into Gmail’s broader "Smart Features" setting, which also controls package tracking cards, calendar integrations and Wallet loyalty cards.
Proofreading and subscription rollout
AI Pro and Ultra subscribers will see a new proofreading feature that underlines suggested edits and offers streamlined rewrites powered by Gemini 3. Google says these suggestions go beyond standard spellcheck by improving clarity and tone.
Many AI features that launched behind paywalls last year — such as email summaries, "Help me write," and Suggested replies — are being expanded to free users. Proofread, Search AI Overviews and the AI Inbox start with premium tiers but are likely to reach the free tier over time.
Privacy and controls
Google reiterates users can disable Smart Features to block Gemini, but doing so also disables other conveniences tied to the same setting. There’s no timetable for a broad AI Inbox rollout, and accuracy and privacy trade-offs remain central questions as Google expands AI inside Gmail.
